Waste Management and the Environment

Every year, residents of the UK dispose of millions of tonnes of waste, twenty per cent of which is collected for recycling. Although this figure is comparatively low, many European countries recycle nearly half of their waste, it has steadily improved.

However, there is much work to be done and mountains of waste that shamefully end up in landfills rather than being delivered to recycling plants. Why is this? Well, perhaps part of the problem is that people simply do not understand the importance of recycling. Sure, they put out their bottles and cans and newspapers every other week, but how many residents actually stop to think about why they are doing what they do? In all likelihood, many of them recycle simply because they will be fined if they fail to.

So, why is recycling important? Without going into any technical process, recycling makes sense because it saves energy and reduces pollution. Simply put, it takes more energy to make a new bottle or can or to cut down a tree to make paper than it does to simply recycle these items. Recycling has also been a boon to waste management facilities, as they often struggle to find a place to store all of the waste. (more...)

Recycling Used Cars

If you have an old car that is no longer running or is ready to be put out of its misery, you might consider recycling it. But since we are not talking about bottles or cans, owners generally have a number of options.

To begin with, they can donate their car to charity and receive a tax break, or they can simply donate the car to their favourite charity and forget about the tax break. They can also give the car away by listing it as a free automobile online or in the local paper.

When it comes to actually recycling used cars , there are two popular choices. The first one is to take your old car to the local junk yard. Even if the engine is worn out, there are literally hundreds of parts that other drivers can remove from your old car for a small fee. The price that you receive for the vehicle will often depend not only on the make and model, but also on the number of working parts. If the car is running, it is likely that you will receive at least a couple of hundred pounds. (more...)

DIY Has Never Been More Important Environmentally!

Environmental concerns are at the forefront of our collective thoughts today. And if they are not, then they very well should be. While policies on climate change, co2 emissions etc are up to the government to make, there is a lot that we as individuals can do to reduce pollution and save energy. Two of the simplest steps that can be taken are recycling, and reusing.

There is a reason why recycling is important. It is not a mindless game designed to make use of our spare coloured bins! Recycling saves material that can be used again from going into a landfill and sitting there for decades. It saves energy, time, money, and resources.

In this day and age, the most important thing we can do is reuse things, build your own, create your own objects perhaps from waste materials, and be creative, instead of buying new. Production costs money, resources, and does more damage to the environment. For example, building your own furniture can be so much more inspiring, satisfying and cheap! And what’s more, it is also easy, thanks to products like fastcap . (more...)
