See News page for a report on the DOVE/ DTD public meeting held on Thurs 19th July at the Brighthelm Centre

'The government has just published on 17/07/07 a new Air Quality Strategy' in which the Minister for the South East admits that 'Air pollution is currently estimated to reduce the life expectancy of every person in the UK by an average of 7-8 months with estimated equivalent health costs of up to £20 billion pounds each year'.

For those living near the planned Hollingdean Waste Transfer Station and Newhaven Incinerator the impact of air pollution on their health will be far greater.

For more information see Defras website

Dump the Dump are now campaigning with other groups in the city for:

  • a rejection of the current Waste Local Plan – with its dependence on waste-bulking and incineration for waste disposal
  • the re-negotiation of the £1 billion 25 year Integrated Waste Contract with Veolia Environmental Services – to deliver technology that is fit for the future in Brighton & Hove and East Sussex

We believe that the Council should follow the lead of other authorities - who are developing more sustainable alternatives for dealing with their waste

We are launching our commitment to a more sustainable Waste Local Plan at the Public Meeting on Thursday 19th July.

If you do not want your rubbish dumped in Hollingdean and then burned over Newhaven, come to the meeting to find out about the alternatives.

We will have speakers against incineration and waste-bulking, and in favour of other greener waste management solutions.

Remediation works must cease until an

independent monitoring agency

is appointed

****NEWSFLASH****

Dump the Dump has today passed on a series of questions to local councillors about the remediation works on the site.

We are very disappointed about the lack of notice that was given about the work re-starting on the site, and about the quality of the information that has been provided about the remediation plan.

We believe that, given the contamination on the site, the community should have been consulted about the methods being considered for remediation, and communication should have been timely and comprehensive.

We have therefore called for the works to cease until written assurances have been made, and an independent monitoring agency appointed.

Green Party adopts Dump the Dump manifesto commitment

"The Green Party has stated that it is still opposed to the private finance initiative that Brighton & Hove City Council has negotiated with Veolia, in particular the dump at Hollingdean and the incinerator at Newhaven.  Greens want to minimise waste and use other technologies to deal with the city's rubbish and recycling problems.

The Green Party has agreed that it will work to review the position at Hollingdean with the aim of re-negotiation of the Veolia contract.  They have adopted the position of the Independent Dump the Dump candidates in the recent Council elections who declared that a re-negotiation was an essential first move."

Dump the Dump would like to thank the whole community for voting for us in the local election !

Thank you Dump the Dump supporters and volunteers

for your tireless support

The Dump the Dump campaign has been going for well over a year now in opposition to the proposal for a commercial company (Veolia) to build and operate a waste station with a capacity of 200, 000 tonnes in Hollingdean to handle all domestic waste from Brighton and Hove and beyond.

We have opposed this scheme on the grounds of health, safety, intensification of traffic, the inappropriateness of the location and the unsustainability in terms of this form of waste management.

The campaign has galvanised huge support for its stance with around 2500 letters of objection to each of the two subsequent applications for the scheme being sent to the Council. We have the overwhelming support of all local councillors and our local MP, David Lepper.

Despite this the application was passed with a vote of 8 for and 4 against on 19th June. But opposition has if anything increased in size and intensity with more and more people becoming actively involved in the campaign and a continuous barrage of letters to the press.

We feel that the council has acted very badly in this matter – inadequately consulting with local people, promoting the scheme via its newspaper and via a leaflet and letter distribution to thousands of homes on Council headed paper (paid for by YOU) in advance of supposedly independently assessing the virtues of the scheme and building up the incorrect impression that this is about increasing recycling. We are also making complaints about how the process of the application has been dealt with.

Despite the decision on 19th June the fight continues on a number of fronts and we hope to have the decision to go ahead with the dump overturned. You can help by active involvement, money and continued letters to the council and the press. Click on "What you can do" above to find out how

The fight goes on to oppose building of Brighton and Hove’s rubbish dump in the middle of a family community, campaigners have vowed, despite City councillors backing the plan in the face of fierce opposition today (Monday June 19).

Ed Start of community campaigners Dump the Dump, who presented its objections to the proposals at the meeting, said: “We are deeply disappointed that our councillors failed to appreciate how this proposal will impact on our community.

“They have put commercial interest and petty politics before the real needs of the community, and we can promise that this will have consequences – for all Parties – at the ballot box across Brighton and Hove. We have been ill-served by politicians who have rubber-stamped a face-saving waste-management solution for the City council – one that has also consigned an entire residential area, along with its schools, small business and shops, to the rubbish bin.

“But the fight isn’t over yet. There is huge local opposition to the scheme – there were thousands of letters of objection – and we are ready to challenge this decision in the courts.…

“We are also dismayed that the Local Education Authority has signally failed in its duty of care to our children, who will bear the brunt of this monstrous development, due to its proximity to two large schools. Too little action too late, Mr David (head of LEA).

“We have lost this particular battle, despite the very hard work of a committed team of local people who felt compelled to take action on behalf of the community. But we haven’t lost the war yet. There are better ways of dealing the City’s waste – more sustainable, more environmentally friendly and better for the whole of Brighton and Hove.”

Try something new today - join the DOVE E-Petition against the incineration of household rubbish.

DOVE have set up an E-Petition on a new government website. These are the comments on the petition page:

“Waste should not be incinerated. If rubbish is burnt fine particulates are absorbed directly into the blood stream via the lungs. Fine particles can harm health, especially if people already have breathing difficulties or lung disease. Fine particles have been linked to respiratory disease and premature death.

But that may not be the worst of it...

Dioxins and furans are some of the most toxic chemicals known to science. The major source of dioxin in the environment comes from waste-burning incinerators. In addition to cancer, exposure to dioxin can also cause severe reproductive and developmental problems. Dioxin is well-known for its ability to damage the immune system and interfere with hormonal systems. Dioxin exposure has been linked to birth defects, inability to maintain pregnancy, decreased fertility, reduced sperm counts, endometriosis, diabetes, learning disabilities, immune system suppression, lung problems, skin disorders, lowered testosterone levels and much more”
