An application has been made
to the Council to build a Waste Transfer Station and Material
Recovery Facility at the former abattoir site off Hollingdean
Lane.
The site will process ALL the waste from
the Brighton & Hove area - 200,000 tonnes of waste
every year. The buildings will be 15 meters high. HGV
movements will be substantial. This site is uniquely unsuitable
because of its proximity to schools and residential areas.
This is a moral and an ethical issue. The size of the
development is just too large and industrial. This is
NOT a campaign against the principles
of recycling local waste.
We oppose this development on the following grounds:
· not enough public consultation, given the obvious
scale of the development
· development to be NEXT DOOR to two schools and
hundreds of homes - 15 meters from Downs Infants School
playground. See the PROPOSALS link for details.
· too great an impact of extra traffic, HGVs, articulated
lorries, vans, and extra congestion, and associated pollution.
· significant impact on noise, dust and vermin
pollution.
· environmental injustice: U.N. sub-commission
on Human Rights states that ‘we should have freedom
from pollution, environmental degradation, and activities
that adversely affect the environment or threaten life,
health, lively-hood, well-being, or sustainable development.
· It is a basic human right to have access to clean
air and a safe environment.
The ‘Hollingbury and Stanmer Ward’ is already
recognised as an area in need of regeneration. The recent
UK Government ‘Independent Enquiry into Inequalities
in Health Report’ notes that, the burden of air
pollution tends to fall on people experiencing disadvantage.
In the application documentation from
Onyx there has been more written about the bird boxes
and buddleiah that they will supply, than about the health
of the children and the effects this development will
have upon them.
Voicing our concerns is not NIMBYism, we support recycling
and we're fully aware of the need to address waste management.
This is not the right solution!
